Taiwan-Japan manga culture exhibition to open in Kyoto

The Preparatory Office of the National Taiwan Museum of Comics, in collaboration with the Kyoto International Manga Museum, will launch the exhibition “A Century of Manga Culture: An Encounter of Taiwan and Japan’s Youth (臺灣少年與日本少年──臺日漫畫․百年邂逅)” on May 24 in Kyoto, Japan.

Supported by the Ministry of Culture, this exhibition will unravel the modern history of the paths Taiwan and Japan have taken, examining the influence of historical and political factors that have influenced their manga cultures, as well as the manga artists and editors who resisted these influences to carve out new forms of expression.

The exhibition centers on two iconic figures in manga: Japan’s “God of Manga” Tezuka Osamu and Taiwanese manga publisher Tsai Kun-lin (蔡焜霖), showcasing how their lives and work reflect the intersections between Taiwanese and Japanese manga culture.

In addition, Cuan-Le-Ge Puppet Troupe (全樂閣木偶劇團) and Guang-Xin-Ge Puppet Troupe (明興閣掌中劇團) will perform traditional Taiwanese puppetry at the exhibition’s opening.

The exhibition will be on view through June 24.(It is scheduled to be exhibited in the eastern section of the National Comics Museum in the summer of 2025.)
